Longtime irrigation district chief engineer Sam Bologna, 66, is throwing his hat in the ring for a seat on the South San Joaquin Irrigation District Board of Directors -- a board he served for 47 years.
Bologna was the guest speaker at the noon Ripon Rotary Club this week at Spring Creek Country Club where social distancing is maintained at separated tables on the veranda overlooking the first T.
He is hoping to secure the Division 3 seat on the board in the November election that includes areas of Manteca and Ripon.
Bologna was most recently credited with the development of Division 9 pressurized irrigation system that carries his name and is located in Ripon. That system allows area farmers to irrigate from their cell phones, their computers, or their iPads.
On his retirement, the board cited his record in a resolution stating: “Sam has been instrumental in nurturing and continuing relationships with local cities, with neighboring water districts and with professional consultants -- relationships that have contributed to the success of the South San Joaquin Irrigation District during his tenure.”
The resolution also recognized their chief engineer’s years of service, dedication, and contributions by declaring that the East Basin Regulating Reservoir for the Division 9 Pressurization Project is known as the Sam Bologna Reservoir.
His future goals include maintaining the “precious water rights” for his two communities away from the diversion measures proposed by the State Water Board. Bologna said he is also very supportive of the need to provide low cost and reliable electric service to the communities he will be serving.
The district headquarters are located on East Yosemite Avenue midway between Highway 99 and Austin Road.
