A river bottom fire in the brush along the Stanislaus River broke out about 9 a.m. Monday morning and threatened custom homes along the 1800 block of Riverview Circle and encroached the Jack Tone Golf Course.
Multiple fire departments responded to the scene in a mutual aid effort with some 50 firefighters on the fire line throughout the day with smoke seen for miles coming from the south side of the Ripon community. Firefighters seemed to be getting control of the fire late in the afternoon.
Fire crews joined Ripon firefighters at the scene including engines and fire trucks from Salida, Modesto, West Stanislaus County, Lathrop, Escalon, and Manteca. Two firefighters reportedly suffered from dehydration and were treated inside the Ripon Ambulance.
Several fire crews placed their engines along the fence line on Riverview Circle fearing the fire might ignite brush and trees along an established wrought iron fence bordering the roadway at that location. Other firefighters were on the river bottom aggressively fighting the stubborn blaze.
Neighbors in the area walked the sidewalks fearing their homes might be in danger as they watched clouds of smoke fill the air hundreds of feet above their neighborhood. One woman voiced her concern saying this was how the big Santa Rosa fire got its start. Smoke could be seen as far away as Manteca and Modesto to the south of town.
Roads were closed from Doak Boulevard to areas where firefighters were working the fire toward the Stanislaus River bottom.
As of Tuesday, Ripon Consolidated Fire District along with mutual aid from other departments are still on the scene making sure to secure hot spots in the area and encourage citizens to avoid the area, including the walking path for the remainder of the week while they continue to work along the river.
