Following the completion of a 3-year renovation process on the front 9 greens complexes in the Spring of 2021, Spring Creek Golf and Country Club members voted to engage in a back 9 greens renovation project last October and redo all 9 green complexes at once. With the architectural expertise of President and Chief Design Officer, Bruce Charlton and Senior Project Architect, Mike Gorman of the Robert Trent Jones II architectural firm, the project are coming to fruition and culminating in a grand re-opening on Wednesday, June 1st. A ribbon-cutting ceremony with a champagne toast is scheduled for 8:00 am with 2 groups consisting of Bruce Charlton, former and current Club Presidents, Nancy Haug and Matt Sinclair, Superintendent and project manager, Mike Stieler, General Manager, Steve Hupe, Head Golf Professional, Shea Rollins, Greens Renovation Project Chairman, Glenn Davis, and Greens Committee Chairman, Kurt Weinheimer scheduled to be the first to play the nine new greens immediately following.
Spring Creek’s original back nine greens were designed and built-in 1972 by former Spring Creek Head Golf Professional, Lee Weintz, who was granted honorary Club membership status after he retired from service to the Club. Architect, Jack Fleming designed the original front nine greens in 1965 and was a disciple of famed architect, Dr. Alister MacKenzie who designed notable California courses such as Cypress Point Club, Pasatiempo Golf Club, and Lake Merced Golf Club. Using that connection inspired the Club to pursue a modern-day tribute to that historic era. With the renovation of both nines now complete, the green complexes have the distinctive look of the “Golden Age of Architecture” from the 1920s and 1930s, made famous by MacKenzie and other architects of that incredible era in golf course design.
Spring Creek’s own Superintendent, Mike F. Stieler, CGCS spearheaded the front nine design and build direction and has helped manage the entire renovation project, from start to finish, over the last 4 years with initial architectural assistance from Josh Pettit of Pacific Golf Design, Inc. on the first 6 holes. Charlton and Gorman designed the last 3 holes of the front nine and the entire back nine, where they created a wonderful tribute to the classical charm of the “Golden Age of Architecture” era, but with a modern update. “With the completion of the renovation, Spring Creek G&CC now has a layout worthy of a championship pedigree that is both incredibly interesting and very playable for all levels of golfers. In its 57-year history, this stands as a landmark achievement for Spring Creek,” noted General Manager, Steve Hupe.
